About Me and My Views on Therapy

About Steve Seliger

Being a therapist is a great privilege. I feel honored to be welcomed into the lives of many wonderful people. Every day I learn so much. The issues brought up in therapy are the most significant, intimate, and ultimately human moments I can imagine.

People trust me, and I see it as a sacred obligation to uphold that trust. I believe that the journey and the lessons of life are our greatest gift. That the greatest gift we can give to others is to be our most authentic, honest and joyous self.  My two least favorite phrases are “should” and “supposed to.” Life is a complex journey filled with challenging ambiguities. We try our best to avoid making mistakes, yet mistakes are essential to learning and growth.

It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.

~Ursula K. LeGuin

Life is an opportunity to learn, to share, to create, to be grateful, and to experience deep connection with others. Quite often we don’t choose our circumstances; they are thrust upon us. At best we get to choose our attitude and our actions in the face of sometimes unavoidable adversity. This is the context for most of my therapeutic relationships.

People come to therapy when faced with suffering and adversity. They want to know what to do. They want different results. Therapy is a creative collaborative conversation designed to help people restructure their thoughts, feelings and behaviors resulting in increased health and integrity.
